Iron Man (Anthony Edward "Tony" Stark) is tritagonist of Reassemble campaign of Marvel's Avengers. He also serves as the main protagonist of the prequel comic MA: Iron Man.

Website Bio

A billionaire, genius, inventor, & co-founder of the Avengers. He vows to protect the world from catastrophic threats.

Biography

Tony Stark is the son of technology mogul Howard Stark and his wife Maria. When he was 15 years old, he had entered an MIT competition where he had to access the data in a phone with biometric locks, which stymied the other competitors. Using spare parts, Tony built a custom cellular phone and copied the contents from the target phone to the phone he built, bypassing the biometric locks, and accessing the data within, resulting in his victory over the competitors in the MIT competition.

Tony inherited the business after his parents’ deaths. While making his own for the company, he also finalized the designs of his late father's designs, including that of the Helicarriers and nuclear warfare. Initially developing weapons technology for organizations like SHIELD, Stark turned a blind eye to those using it, believing he was not responsible for how his technology was used. At some point, he was romantically involved with his secretary Pepper Potts, though it presumably ended badly (although he still keeps in touch with her via mail).

After a brush with death, Stark decided to become involved in personally protecting civilians from hostile threats. To achieve this, he developed an armored suit fitted with many technologies, including Repulsors and an Arc Reactor. In order to avoid legal issues, he kept any technology pertaining to his suits separate from Stark Industries itself. Taking the identity Iron Man, he became a founding member of the Avengers after an encounter with Loki. During his time on the team, Stark worked alongside Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Ant-Man, Thor, Captain Marvel and the Hulk. Stark was also the creator of the artificial intelligence JARVIS, which assisted the team in their operations.

Road to A-Day

Events of MA: Iron Man

When the Lethal Legion attacked a secret SHIELD shipment, Iron Man joined the Avengers to confront them. During it, he fought against Beetle, though noticed that the criminal was quicker than him. Though disadvantaged, Stark worked with Black Widow to subdue the criminal and defeated Titania. Suspecting they may have improved their technology, Iron Man analyzed Beetle's suit, discovering that it contained Stark Industries technology.

Visiting the Vault some time later, Tony Stark interrogated Beetle's alter ego, Abner Jenkins, to learn where he acquired the technology. The criminal only hinted that Stark Industries technology was being replicated by criminals all over the world, leading him to wonder whether the organization had a mole. After checking its security protocols for tampering, Stark began to question his teammates on how they would infiltrate his organization. After an argument with Bruce Banner, he decided to run a sting operation on his laboratories.

Eventually pinpointing a lab employee, Iron Man confronted the culprit, who was revealed to be the criminal Spymaster. Learning that he'd been selling the technology on the dark web, Stark defeated the criminal and began investigating how he had infiltrated the network. Discovering that they had exploited a security flaw placed in his tech by Nick Fury, Iron Man brought the criminal to the SHIELD director and confronted him on the discoveries. As the meeting finished, he revealed he had removed it and left a vague warning not to do so again.

Events of MA: Thor

Working with Banner, Stark created a experimental portal system for the Avengers to use in their operations. Requesting Thor to help provide the Odinforce as a power source, they successfully activated it. However, interference from Loki led to it being destroyed. As Banner confronted him on not checking the figures, Stark denied the accusations, though expressed worry that he'd transform into the Hulk. When Thor suggested that they instead used by Bifrost, he politely refused, commenting that they would likely be indebted to Odin if they did so. As problems arose when Heimdall could not close the portal, Stark left to avoid becoming involved, heavily implied to be Loki's influence.

After Thor uncovered his brother's actions, Stark met them to discuss the events. Though impressed, he voiced concern that the public may blame the Avengers for the events. Stark reluctantly agreed to get a drink with Thor and Banner to celebrate their defeat, during which they were once again told the story of how the Asgardian defeated the Midgard Serpent.

Events of MA: Hulk

After Hulk's battle with an electrical monster, Stark made a public statement that the Avengers would work on reestablishing the destroyed power grid. Visiting visited Banner in at the SHIELD facility's medical bay, he revealed that it would actually be Stark Industries who would repair it. When Banner revealed he was starting to lose some control over the Hulk, Tony brushed off his concerns, reassuring him that he would not permanently become his alter-ego and he would deal with the damage.

Leaving him and Monica Rappaccini, he ran into George Tarleton. Revealing that Fury was investigating where they creature had come from, he agreed that they had received a terrible setback and to look into his models for a safer source of energy.

Events of MA: Captain America

After Captain America defeated Batroc the Leaper, he called Stark to discuss bringing in new Avengers onto the team and expanding their operations. This idea struck a cord with Stark, leading to decide to expand their operations to the West Coast.

Events of MA: The Extinction Key

Sometime after finalizing the decision, Stark was visited at Avengers Tower by Thor. Wondering where Captain Marvel was, he learned that the Asgardian had returned to Earth to protect it in Danvers' absence. After the discussion, he called Banner to discuss moving the Avengers to San Francisco, where he was staying to help Monica and Tarleton with work at Advanced Idea Mechanics (AIM).

Events of Marvel's Avengers

A-Day

Initially absent from the event, Tony arrived on the Chimera during the main event, unintentionally interrupting Tarleton's speech. Walking onto the VIP balcony, he briefly interacted with Kamala Khan by complementing her bag. Almost immediately after joining his teammates on stage, Taskmaster's forces began their attack on the Golden Gate Bridge.

Flying out with Thor to scout out the incident, Iron Man engaged with the group and their vehicles, reporting his findings to the team. Among his discoveries were the use of Pulsar Tanks and the use of stolen SHIELD technology. Iron Man also helped minimize the damage and rescue civilians caught on the bridge, most of which caused either by the Hulk or Taskmaster's Sonic Bomb. After Masters and his army were dealt with, the Avengers realized the attack was merely a distraction to bring them away from the Chimera. As he headed back to help Captain America, Stark watched in horror as the helicarrier exploded and crashed down in the bay.

After A-Day

After the tragic events of A-Day, Stark attempted to defend the Avengers in congress hearings after Tarleton and Rappaccini submitted reports indicating they were responsible. However, these were undermined when Banner had admitted that the team posed a threat to the world, leading to their disbandment. Having lost his company to rival company Hammer Industries, Tony retreated to his family estate Golden Acres, making his home in a trailer on the estate. He also began to bear a grudge against Banner, believing the latter's testimony had destroyed their chances of saving the world. Stark Industries was dismantled by his rival Justin Hammer and the remaining shares were purchased by AIM, who allowed the former to keep the shares he already purchased, in order to emotionally manipulate Tony, leaving him more quick to react, predictable, and infuriated as well. However, they also forcefully made the former’s company, Hammer Industries, a subsidiary, in order to have some semblance of ownership over all Stark-made assets, save for Tony’s suits, which were kept separate from the company and therefore not part of the assets seized by AIM. Many of Stark's designs were later implemented into the subsequent technologies, including various Arc Reactor projects. Around this time, AIM had considered killing Tony, but ultimately decided he was more “pathetic” alive.

Reassembling the Avengers

With help from JARVIS, Kamala and Bruce tracked Tony down to Golden Acres to ask him to help uncover what had happened to Cap and Tarleton's involvement. Still furious for Banner's testimony, Tony refused to help until presented a video by Khan. Whilst observing it, Tony realized that the video was not corrupted, as they believed, but actually encrypted in a method designed to look so. After being alerted that AIM forces were tracking them by Tiny Dancer, he navigated his family's estate to assemble a makeshift suit. As he did so, he fought against Tarleton's drones and synthoids. Stark, Khan and Hulk subsequently fought the forces, though he lost a large portion of possessions when the latter threw his caravan at an AIM Warship.

Accompanying them to the now-decommisioned Chimera, Tony reunited with JARVIS and decided to repair the helicarrier, allowing them to avoid possible land intrusions. After assessing the damage, he decided to also acquire materials to reconstruct his suits, using old pieces of armor onboard to construct a temporary one. Whilst checking on Kamala for Bruce, Tony learned she was creating her own costume, to which he gave her advice on it. Tracking the materials to a nearby AIM facility, he went alone to gather them, successfully intercepting a material convoy before it could leave.

After repairing the door controls to the armory, Stark rebuilt his old Iron Man costume within the Fabrication Machine. After meeting SHIELD agents sent by Maria Hill, he decided to look into repairing the Chimera. Sending Bruce and Kamala to investigate a power signature in the Utah Badlands, Tony investigated a power signature on the Eastern Seaboard. Tracking it to an AIM facility, Stark learned that AIM were reconstructing his Arc Reactor technology. After ensuring it destroyed, Tony realized he's hubris with responsibility of his technology and decided to help take it away from AIM's hands. He also decided to salvage the deactivated technology to power the Chimera's engines.

When Banner and Khan established contact with the Resistance and former teammate Hank Pym, Iron Man joined them to help gather data on AIM's Inhuman experimentation. The group were successful, receiving needed supplies to finish repairs on the Chimera. After Kamala was captured breaking into AIM's Black Mesa facility, Stark and Banner travelled to the location in the now-repaired helicarrier. Upon arrival, they found that Black Widow, having been helping the Resistance as "Tiny Dancer", had already infiltrated the facility, freed the captive Inhumans, including Khan, and subdued Monica. The group reunited onboard the Chimera, where they monitored Bruce's interrogation of Rappaccini about the location of the Adaptoid lab.

During the middle of it, AIM forces attacked the Chimera to rescue Monica and crash the repaired helicarrier, hoping to frame the Avengers for another tragedy. Taking Kamala with him, Iron Man fought through the attackers to reach the hull. As he held off the main boarding party, Tony ordered her to defend JARVIS's systems and regain control of the command deck. During the fight, Thor returned to help fight off AIM, helping destroy the attacking Dreadbots.

After the fight and stopping the Chimera's descent, Stark and the rest of the Avengers reassembled at the War Table to view the recovered footage. To their shock and disappointment, it revealed that Captain America had ordered Tarleton to seal him in and destroyed the Terrigen reactor, causing the crash. As the others left, Stark confronted Bruce about leading them on with the lead, believing that he had actually known the truth about it. As tensions increased and Banner transformed into the Hulk, he engaged him and summoned the Hulkbuster. The two then fought across the Chimera, causing damage to the helicarrier and the residents to flee.

Some time later, Kamala contacted them across their communication network and revealed her suspicions that Monica had hidden the lab on the satellite Ambrosia. As she delivered a heartfelt speech about their willingness to put their differences aside to come together, Stark was convinced to return and help expose AIM. Upon his return, he apologized to Bruce and started planning to investigate it. Deciding to restart Project Starboost, Tony decided use Pym Particles to shrink the jet components, allowing him to fly him into space. With Widow also rejoining them, they infiltrated one of AIM's compounds and retrieved Pym's research. With Theo's help, they then rescued the Ant Hill from an attacking Warbot.

After completing the Starboost suit, Tony used the engines to fly up to Ambrosia and entered the satellite, though used up most of its energy doing so. While navigating it, he learned that Monica had been created her Regenerative Formula from a superpowered being's DNA and been treating Tarleton with it. Eventually finding the person's confinements, Stark was shocked to discover that it was actually Rogers, who had survived A-Day but been placed in cryo-hibernation by Rappaccini without Tarleton knowing. Reuniting with his former comrade, Tony updated him on what had happened and worked to escape Ambrosia as Monica activated its self-destruct. Making their way into a pod, they were thrown into deep space.

Believing they'd die, Tony asked Steve about why he'd destroyed the Terrigen reactor and learned about its reaction with something in the San Francisco bay. As they accepted what seemed to be certain death, Thor appeared and helped push them back to Earth. Returning to the Chimera, they and the other Avengers fully assembled at the War Table, where they vowed to expose AIM's activities.

Confronting MODOK

Whilst preparing new suits for the team, Iron Man and the Avengers learned about an AIM Warship attacking Manhattan. Stark took part in the fight against both it and the Watchdogs, recovering its black box to discover its source and purpose. After investigating, Stark learned about Tarleton's plans to wipe out Inhumans using a modified version of Terrigen and traced its source back to a hidden facility in the San Francisco Quarantine Zone. With the team agreeing to confront him, he provided them with the finished Stark Tech suits before they left to confront Tarleton.

Upon arrival, Iron Man and Thor were ordered by Cap to target the facility's generators to disable the facility's transmitter and security defenses. During the battle, they learned about Tarleton's insanity and his new identity, MODOK. After disabling the generators, Iron Man and Thor joined Cap and Hulk to fight off Adaptoids deployed, as well as providing a distraction for Kamala and Widow. As Cap made his way to what appeared to be the signal transmitter, he engaged the Warships guarding it and set JARVIS to plan evacuation of the Inhuman prisoners.

After tracking the signal to the excavation site, Iron Man provided covering for the other Avengers as they gathered in the area. Discovering MODOK at the location, he was the first of the team to engage him, taking out his chair's jet thrusters. Stark then helped in provide Cap and Thor in their fights with him. When MODOK used his powers to unearth a Kree Sentry, Iron Man confronted the machine with Thor, though were eventually forced to bow out of the fight. He also watched Kamala engage the sentry itself and defeat MODOK.

After the battle, Stark and his teammates returned to the Chimera and complemented Kamala for her feat, though stated they needed to work on her loss of consciousness from the embiggening powers. At Bruce's request, he and the others allowed him some time alone with Kamala.

Reigning Supreme

Some time after defeating MODOK, Iron Man assembled with the other Avengers at the War Table, where they learned from Maria Hill that AIM's Board of Directors had appointed Monica Rappaccini as their Scientist Supreme. Sometime after, Tony and Bruce reconciled, after the feuding that happened between them as a result of A-Day. Along with his teammates, he vowed to expose the organization for their actions and involved with their attempts. After many operations with the reassembled team, Iron Man and the other Avengers decided to induct Kamala, now using the alias Ms. Marvel, into their ranks. As Steve attempted to break it to her calmly, Tony interrupted his speech to get to the point.

Post-MODOK

At some point after MODOK was defeated, Tony, with assistance from JARVIS, attempted to lift Mjolnir and seemingly succeeded, yet Thor refuses to acknowledge that this was possible, even disallowing Tony from ever trying this again.

Taking AIM

After a series of Tachyon Rifts opened up across the Earth, Iron Man joined the Avengers in investigating their cause at Hill's request. Leading the team to investigate one of AIM's facilities, Stark was contacted by a fellow intruder who recognized them. Deciding to cooperate with them, Stark eventually learned that they were Hawkeye's protégé Kate Bishop, which seemed to surprise him. After making their way to her position, they helped fight off an elite squad she was facing. As Kate left, Iron Man tried to get her to share her motives, though she refused and promised to be in touch.

Returning to SHIELD Substation Zero, Stark joined a meeting between Kate and Hill. During it, he learned that Clint had been captured by AIM while investigating Fury's fate and that it was related to a series of experiments. With Kate having uncovered its relation to AIM scientist Lyle Getz, Stark agreed to help her capture him. As the meeting ended, he tried to catch up with Kate and apologize for not being in contact over after A-Day. Asking whether she'd be interested in returning to the team, he only received a vague answer. Despite this, Stark set up a HARM Room challenge for her.

Iron Man also joined Kate in tracking down Getz and capturing him from the facility. He also watched her and Hill's interrogation of the scientist to discover what Rappaccini was planning. After the fight, Stark offered to help Kate continue the investigation with the Avengers' support, which she accepted. It's possible he later talked to Cap about her feelings towards their actions and convinced him to officially induct her into the team.

Iron Man later took part in the subsequent missions, during which they learned that Rappaccini was attempting to help a future version of herself prevent an apocalypse. He also took helped the Resistance construct their own Time Bridge so they could retrieve Barton and later helped him escape. After the battle, Stark joined the Avengers in briefing Hawkeye and learned about the timeline's events, during which he recognized a Kree Sentry from their fight with MODOK. He listened to Barton's briefing and responded when he lost consciousness in the midst of planning.
